What is the best dog bed for a Lab?

The best bed for a Lab is the right size, deep enough that they don't sink to the floor, and easy to wash. Labs shed, swim and find every puddle, so the cover matters as much as the foam.

The EachPaw bed is a memory foam bed with a bolster at one end. The cover zips off, goes in the washer and is safe with bleach.

What size bed does a Lab need?

The AKC lists male Labs at 65 to 80 lbs and females at 55 to 70 lbs. Most land on the Large.

Lab Weight Usual size
Male 65 to 80 lbs Large
Female 55 to 70 lbs Large
Small, curls up Under 55 lbs Medium

To check the length, measure your Lab lying down from nose to base of tail. Add about 6 in if they curl up, or 10 to 12 in if they stretch out.

Match your number to a size

Is a Medium or Large bed better for a Lab?

For most Labs, the Large. The Medium is made for dogs from 30 to 60 lbs, and if your dog is close to 60 lbs, choose the larger one.

A Medium can work for a small female Lab who curls up and measures 36 in or less from nose to tail. If she sleeps flat out, the Large gives her 6 in more length and 6 in more width.

Dog weight Size (L x W x H) Price
30 to 60 lbs Medium, 42 x 24 x 4 in $104
60 to 100 lbs Large, 48 x 30 x 5 in $140

L x W is the sleeping area. H is the foam depth.

What is the best bed for a 70‑pound Lab?

A Large. It has 5 in of foam and suits dogs from 60 to 100 lbs, so a 70-pound Lab is well inside its range. You'd only need the XL if your Lab is long and sprawls past 48 in.

To test your Lab's current bed, press your palm hard into the spot where they sleep. If you can feel the floor, it's too thin for them.

How do you keep a Lab's dog bed clean?

Wash the cover whenever it's muddy, wet or covered in hair:

  1. Unzip the cover and take out the foam insert.
  2. Machine wash the cover cold on a gentle cycle. Chlorine or oxygen bleach (like OxiClean) is safe.
  3. Tumble dry low, and make sure it's fully dry before zipping it back on.

Never put the foam in the washer. If anything soaks through, blot it with mild soap and water and let it air-dry. A charcoal backup cover, sold separately, keeps the bed in use on wash day.

What bed suits an older Lab?

An older Lab still needs the Large in most cases, but getting on and off matters more. The front and sides of the EachPaw bed are open, so there's no wall to climb over, and the edge is 5 in high on the Large.

If your Lab has stiff joints or arthritis, ask your vet about their care.

Lab dog bed FAQ

What size bed does a Lab puppy need?

Size for the grown dog, not the puppy. Most Labs end up on the Large. If your puppy still chews bedding, wait or use something cheap for now, since the warranty doesn't cover chewing.

Is a bolster bed good for a Lab?

Yes, if your Lab likes to rest their chin on something. The EachPaw bolster sits at one end only, so your Lab can use it as a headrest or stretch out the other way.

Can two Labs share one dog bed?

Two adult Labs usually need the XL, which is 36 in wide. A Large only suits two Labs if they curl up together.

Will the bed slide on hard floors?

No. The EachPaw bed has a non-slip bottom, which matters most on hardwood, tile and laminate.

Will the bed fit inside a dog crate?

No. The EachPaw bed won't fit inside a dog crate.

What if I pick the wrong size?

Beds bought directly from EachPaw come with a 90-day comfort trial that includes size exchanges, so you can switch from Medium to Large.
