How Long Does a Dog Bed Last?
A dog bed lasts as long as it still holds your dog up, so check the bed, not the calendar.
- Press your palm into your dog's spot. If you feel the floor, the support is gone.
- Look at the bed from the side for a dip that stays after your dog gets up.
- A worn cover can be replaced on its own. Flat foam can't be fixed.

How long does a dog bed last?
No set number of years fits every bed. You'll see figures quoted online, but how long a bed holds up depends on what's inside it, how deep it is for your dog's weight and how your dog uses it.
Loose fill can pack down over time. Thin foam under a heavy dog has more work to do than deep foam under a light one. Digging, chewing and accidents wear any bed out faster.
So instead of counting years, check your dog's bed now and then with the three tests below.
How can you tell if a dog bed is worn out?
- Palm press. Push your palm hard into the spot where your dog sleeps. If you can feel the floor, the bed is too thin for your dog now.
- Elbow check. Watch your dog lying down. If your dog's elbows or hips sink lower than the rest of the body, or touch the floor, that spot has gone flat.
- Side view. After your dog gets up, crouch down level with the bed. A dip that stays in your dog's usual spot, lower than the edges, means the support has worn down.
Unzip the cover and look at the insert too. Lumps, thin spots or fill that has shifted all mean less support.
What are the signs your dog needs a new bed?
- Your dog has started sleeping on the floor, the couch or your bed instead.
- Your dog hangs off the edges or can't stretch out, so the size is now too small.
- Your dog's needs have changed, like an older dog who now struggles with a wall to step over.
- A smell stays in the insert even after you wash the cover.
If your dog suddenly stops using a bed that still passes the tests, ask your vet.

Can you fix a flat dog bed?
Not really. A blanket on a flat bed adds softness, but your dog still sinks to the same low spot. Once the foam has gone flat, the fix is a new bed.
A worn cover is different. The EachPaw cover zips off, and a charcoal backup cover is sold separately, so a torn cover doesn't mean a new bed.
How can you make a dog bed last longer?
- Match the foam depth to your dog's weight, so the bed isn't too thin from day one.
- Wash the cover often, and make sure the cover is fully dry before zipping it back on.
- Keep the foam out of the washer. Blot spills with mild soap and water, then let the foam air‑dry.
- Stop digging and chewing early. The warranty doesn't cover chewing.
On the EachPaw bed, foam depth comes with the size:
| Dog weight | Size | Foam depth |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 30 lbs | Small | 3 in |
| 30 to 60 lbs | Medium | 4 in |
| 60 to 100 lbs | Large | 5 in |
| 100 lbs and up | XL | 6 in |

Dog bed replacement FAQ
How often should you replace a dog bed?
Replace the bed when it fails the palm press, keeps a dip after your dog gets up, or your dog has outgrown it. No set schedule fits every bed.
How long does a memory foam dog bed last?
How long a memory foam dog bed lasts depends on the foam, how deep it is for your dog's weight and how your dog uses the bed. The EachPaw bed comes with a 10‑year warranty that covers the bed flattening.
Should I replace the bed or just the cover?
If the insert still passes the palm press and has no dip, a new cover may be all you need. The EachPaw charcoal backup cover is sold separately, in all four sizes.
Can I put the foam in the washer?
No. Only the cover goes in the washer. If anything reaches the foam, blot it with mild soap and water and let it air‑dry. An enzyme cleaner is OK on the foam too.
Does the warranty cover chewing or accidents?
No. The EachPaw 10‑year warranty covers the bed flattening. It doesn't cover chewing or accidents.
