Best Dog Beds for Golden Retrievers
Go by your Golden's weight, since females can land on either side of the Medium and Large line.
- Male Goldens, 65 to 75 lbs: the Large.
- A female Golden under 60 lbs: the Medium, unless she's long or sleeps stretched out.
- Goldens have a double coat that sheds, so choose a bed with a cover you can unzip and wash often.

What is the best dog bed for a Golden Retriever?
A good bed for a Golden Retriever fits the length you measure, has enough foam that your Golden doesn't press through to the floor, and has a cover that stands up to frequent washing.
The EachPaw bed has a memory foam base, a raised headrest at one end and no walls on the front or sides. The cover unzips from underneath and is safe with bleach.
What size dog bed does a Golden need?
A Golden Retriever over 60 lbs takes the Large. The AKC standard puts males at 65 to 75 lbs and 23 to 24 in tall, and females at 55 to 65 lbs and 21.5 to 22.5 in tall.
| Golden | AKC weight | Likely size |
|---|---|---|
| Male | 65 to 75 lbs | Large |
| Female | 55 to 65 lbs | Medium under 60 lbs, Large at 60+ |
Females are the ones to weigh. A female under 60 lbs takes the Medium, and one at 60 lbs or more takes the Large. Being close to 60 lbs isn't a reason to size up, but being long for her weight or sleeping stretched out is.
How do you measure a Golden for a bed?
Measure your Golden lying on one side, from the tip of the nose to where the tail starts. The feathered tail doesn't count.
Then add room for how your Golden sleeps: about 6 in for a dog who curls into a ball, or 10 to 12 in for one who lies flat with legs out. Compare the total with the bed lengths, 42 in for the Medium and 48 in for the Large.
Here's an example. A 52‑pound female Golden who measures 34 in needs about 40 in if she curls up, so the Medium works. If she sleeps on her side with legs out, she needs 44 to 46 in, so the Large is the better fit.
Should a Golden get a Medium or Large bed?
Go by weight: a Golden under 60 lbs takes the Medium, and one at 60 lbs or more takes the Large. Choose the Large for a lighter Golden only if your dog is long or sleeps stretched out.
| Size | Sleeping area and foam | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Medium, 30 to 60 lbs | 42 x 24 x 4 in | $104 |
| Large, 60 to 100 lbs | 48 x 30 x 5 in | $140 |
Width matters for Goldens who sprawl. The Large is 30 in wide against 24 in on the Medium, so measure from your dog's back to the tips of the paws with legs stretched out, too.
How often should you wash a Golden's bed?
Wash the cover about once a week while your Golden is shedding heavily, and every few weeks the rest of the year. The AKC lists the Golden's coat as a double coat that sheds seasonally, so hair builds up fast in spring and fall.
Lift off the loose hair first, then unzip the cover from underneath. Machine wash it cold on a gentle cycle, and chlorine or oxygen bleach (like OxiClean) is safe for the cover that comes with the bed. Tumble dry low and let it dry fully before zipping it back on.
The foam never goes in the washer. A charcoal backup cover, sold separately, means the bed isn't bare while the main cover is drying.
Golden Retriever dog bed FAQ
How do you get Golden Retriever hair off a dog bed?
Pull the loose hair off before washing. A damp rubber glove or a lint roller run over the top lifts most of it, and shaking the cover outside gets the rest. Less hair in the washer means less hair left on the cover after the wash.
Do Golden Retrievers like a bed with a bolster?
Goldens often rest their chin on something when they settle, such as a couch arm or your feet. The EachPaw bed has a bolster at one end for that, and the front and sides stay open so a Golden can still stretch out.
Should a Golden Retriever puppy get a full‑size bed?
Yes. Buy the size your Golden will need when grown. A Golden expected to weigh 60 to 100 lbs as an adult takes the Large. If your puppy is still chewing bedding, use something inexpensive until that stage passes, because the EachPaw warranty doesn't cover chewing.
When does a Golden Retriever need the XL?
Only when your Golden is unusually long or shares the bed. The XL is 52 x 36 x 6 in, so it suits a Golden who measures more than about 40 in from nose to tail base and sleeps flat out.
Will the bed fit inside a dog crate?
No. The EachPaw bed won't fit inside a dog crate.
Can I switch to a different size if my Golden doesn't fit?
Yes. Beds bought directly from EachPaw include a 90‑day comfort trial, and you can exchange the size during that time.
